MP Milind Deora asks the municipal commissioner to expedite matters related to an open market plot that has turned into a dumping ground

ACTION needed: The filthy ground behind the buildings in Colaba |
The plot, directly behind the Corinthian building at Colaba, was originally a fish market and has been vacant for more than 25 years.
It has become the area's dumping ground where goats are slaughtered, debris dumped, an open air toilet where people urinate and defecate along the outer walls and unhygienic conditions continue to prevail. It has, in short, become one of Mumbai's most expensive open-air garbage dumps.
Pressure
Two years ago, during the naming of Dilip Sardesai Chowk in memory of the late cricketer, residents from
the area who congregate under the Strandmarg Residents Association besieged Deora and pressured the MP about action on the plot.
Last year, on February 14, residents from the A ward area that includes Colaba, held 'meet your elected
representative' session at YMCA in Colaba.
MLA Annie Shekhar had convened the meet where the open plot figured on the agenda in the presence of Deora and Phatak.
A year after Annie Shekhar's son Vinod promised residents action on the plot, the status quo remains. This may have provoked Deora to fire the letter.
u00a0Despite repeated attempts, Phatak remained unavailable for comment.u00a0
The filth spreads
The open plot has u00a0resulted in:
> A strong stench in the prevalent area
> Fish pieces dropped on air-conditioners in the buildings, as birds carry them and drop themu00a0
> Rats getting into Corinthian Building.
The building has subsequently replaced its iron lift doors with closed wooden doors
