The action came within a week of local MP Poonam Mahajan writing to the civic body, after local residents approached her over the matter. The ramp runs along the actor’s bungalow and is often used to park his vanity van.
mid-day’s report on January 29
Citizens have complained, however, that it prevents them from using a considerable portion of an important road and blocks the way to Mount Mary Church from Bandstand.
mid-day has covered this dispute between the Bollywood star and other Bandra residents over the years, and reported recently, that Mahajan had written to the municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte about it on January 29 (‘It’s Poonam Mahajan vs Shah Rukh Khan in Bandra’, February 3).
Last afternoon, a notice was issued to the actor, and he has been given a week to demolish the ramp. If he fails to do so, the BMC will remove the ramp and charge him for expenses. However, sources close to Khan claimed that they hadn’t received any notice yet.
‘Welcome move’
Mahajan, who set the wheels in motion with her letter, said, “I haven’t seen any documents regarding the notice; I have only heard the news via the media. I have done my work. The residents had approached me as they were suffering, and I wrote the letter only because I felt for the cause.
My letter wasn’t against any individual or organisation. The convenience of the common man is my prime motive. If the BMC has initiated action, I welcome it.”
