Mumbai: Taraporevala to cut photography rates

Taking note of a mid-day story, which highlighted the exorbitant rates for clicking photos at Taraporevala Aquarium, auth-orities are now planning to reduce the fee. The aquarium currently charges R500 for cellphone photography, Rs 1,000 for video/digital camera and R5,000 for professional photography (see box).

An official from the fisheries department told mid-day, “The newly inaugurated aquarium received a lot of flak from nature lovers and experts for the rates charged for clicking photos. Officials have, therefore, decided to decrease the rates.” The revised rates are, however, yet to be decided.

Since its reopening after the renovation last month, more than 25 marine fishes have died at the aquarium, and officials claimed that they have solved this issue as well. “Marine fishes usually take time to adjust, but many people alleged that the water supplied to the marine tanks was not suitable and purified.

We have resolved this issue as well, and the fishes are now adjusting well in the marine tanks,” the official added. The aquarium, which was reopened on March 3 after its renovation, has been witnessing a huge rush of eager visitors right from day one.

The ticket counter opens at 10 am and the majority of the morning rush is a result of school kids being brought to the aquarium as part of their extra-curricular activities. But lack of crowd management usually ends up leading to chaos, not only at the counter, but also at the entrance of the aquarium.
