It is believed that this Vrat (fast) can bless the devotee with good fortune and a better life. The name of this festival is given as per its significance. Women observe a fast and tie threads around a banyan tree and pray for the well-being and longevity of their husband and pray for the same husband in every birth.
The celebration derived from the story of Savitri and Satyavan. Based on the story of Savitri who, with her devotion, saved her husband from death (represented by Yama).
