The Malad police have come across a new modus operandi used by thieves — posing as technicians from Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL) and robbing whatever they can lay their hands on.
On Monday, an unidentified youth, believed to be aged 25, stole laptops and other electronic gadgets from a Malad residence, in Mitesh Apartment.
Sources said the flat belongs to a 52-year-old woman, Nital Loke, living with her two daughters. Loke had lodged a complaint with Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL) a week ago for Internet connectivity issues.
“The incident took place around 12 pm. The accused visited Loke on the pretext of checking her Internet connection, and asked for her laptop for the same,” said a source.
Loke said, “When he was checking my laptop, I got a call on my landline, and I got busy with that. Only after it ended did I realise that the man was gone and so was my laptop.”
“There’s a lot of sensitive information in my laptop — documents and bank details,” she added, saying she panicked and narrated the incident to her neighbour who advised her to call the police.
Police sources said that the accused, before visiting Loke, had tried to gain entry to a few other flats in the same building, but no one opened the door.
The accused has been captured on a CCTV camera entering and exiting the premises — he entered around 11.43 am and left at 12.10 pm.
A police team, including Sub-Inspector Hasan Mulani, who is the detection officer, visited the spot and is now on the lookout for him.
