Sudhir Sonawane was caught by police after he confronted a Std VIII student masquerading as a cop; during interrogation, he confessed to having raped a 13-yr-old girl in Tilak Nagar on Saturday
A man was caught red-handed posing as a police officer and trying to intimidate a young girl, with the intention of sexually assaulting her. According to police officials of Pant Nagar station, the 22-year-old man was arrested after being caught harassing a 14-year-old girl in their jurisdiction on Monday.

The accused, identified as Sudhir Sonawane (22), has also confessed to the rape of a 13-year-old girl on Saturday afternoon in Tilak Nagar (‘Man pretends to be cop, rapes minor,’ August 10). An officer from Pant Nagar police station said, “The incident took place late on Monday, when the accused targeted a Standard VIII student. Sonawane followed the girl for some time and then charged at her.”

According to the police, the accused confronted the Std VIII student while she was taking a walk in the area. Identifying himself as a policeman, he claimed to know everything about her. He said he had learnt that she was having an affair and censured her for roaming the streets alone at night.
The officer added, “Sonawane asked her whether she had watched any crime serials, in order to intimidate her. Scared, the girl started walking fast. When he started running after her, the girl ran up to her parents, and complained to them about the policeman harassing her.”
The girl’s parents noticed a police van patrolling nearby, and asked them to intervene. These cops then chased Sonawane and nabbed him. “After he was brought to the police station, the man admitted to harassing the girl and also confessed to the Tilak Nagar rape,” added the officer.
The cops said that Sonawane is unemployed, and are checking whether he committed other sexual crimes. He has been booked under Sections 173 (preventing service of summons or other proceeding, or preventing publication thereof), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code, along with sections 11 and 12 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
