The Air Intelligence Unit of Mumbai Customs seized foreign and Indian currency worth Rs.38, 78,033 in two separate cases at the Mumbai international airport on Tuesday.

In the first case, the AIU intercepted three passengers – Rajkumar Ladharam Israni, who was carrying foreign and Indian currency totally valued at Rs.9, 41,520, Nirmal Mohanlal Dudani, who was carrying foreign and Indian currency totally valued at Rs.7, 23,783, and Mayur Kumar Motwani, who was carrying foreign and Indian currency totally valued at Rs.10, 16,500. The trio was on their way to Dubai and about to take-off on flight EK-507.
In the second case, a passenger, Rahul Maheshkumar Premchandani, was intercepted and the Customs officials recovered foreign and Indian currency valued at Rs.11,96,230. He too was to depart for Dubai on the same flight EK-507.
The Mumbai Customs also arrested two persons, including an airport employee, for allegedly smuggling in gold worth Rs 47 lakh.
"We have arrested two persons, including an employee of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport here, for smuggling in 18 gold bars collectively weighing two kilograms," a Customs official said.
According to the official, a passenger identified as Irfan Sheikh arrived from Dubai with the gold and handed it over to a cleaner Vicky Prajapati who was to take the yellow metal safely, for which he was supposed to get Rs 30,000. Prajapati hid the gold in two dust bins at the airport toilet, the official said.
"However, Prajapati kept half the consignment with himselfand informed the Customs about the rest of the gold found in dustbin," he said.
"Later, Sheikh came back to Prajapati and asked about his gold, the officers got to know about this and when the latter was questioned he admitted taking gold from Sheikh," the official said.
He said this was the 19th case this financial year in which an airport employee has been arrested in a gold smuggling case.
Eightenn gold bars of 10 tola each totally weighing 2099 gram valued at Rs.47, 81,501 was recovered from the dustbins of two toilet cubicles of men’s washroom. This washroom is near the immigration at T2 arrivals. This gold was later claimed by Iran Muhammed Shaikh. Shaikh, having Indian passport number M 3084488, who had arrived from Dubai via Kuwait by Kuwait Airway’s KU-310.
