Having recently completed a nine-month course in design, the students showcased their works before Kumar, who was part of the jury that picked the final collections of 11 artisan designers including weavers, ajrakh printers and bandhani artists.
We hear, she promptly ordered the pieces for an upcoming fashion show. Keen to check out some of the exquisite designs? Head to a three-day exhibition at Artisans’ at Kala Ghoda, December 21 onwards.
Bringin’ the bindi back
Remember Sudha Chandran and her serpentine bindis that made the decade-old television show, Kaahin Kissi Roz memorable? No, we aren’t taking a trip down the saas-bahu soap lane.

We remembered her forehead fashion when we spotted an advert of bookmybindi.com, touted as the world’s first bindi portal, on a bus during our commute.
Piqued, we checked it out to find ourselves gaping at an elaborate collection that would give some of our A-list fashion designers a run for their money.
The portal says they customise designs too, depending on your taste, colour and size preferences. While we liked some of the tiny diamond-shaped bindis and even kitschy tikas, we logged out when we spotted a customised pineapple design.
Celebrating Benegal’s cinema
As the doyen of parallel cinema, Shyam Benegal turns a year younger at 81, celebrate his oeuvre spanning 35 years at a retrospective organised by Osianama.

Starting today (until December 20), the festival will take place at Liberty cinema and showcase over 14 of his iconic films including Ankur, Nishant, Manthan, Trikal, Sooraj Ka Saatvan Ghoda and his well-known documentary, Bharat Ek Khoj.

The filmmaker will also host master-classes over three days and be in conversation with Naseeruddin Shah and Govind Nihalani. What makes the retrospective more special is that a restored print of his 1978 award-winning film, Junoon, will be screened tonight.
The restoration is courtesy the Kapoor family (Shashi Kapoor was the producer-actor in the film). That sounds like a great gift.
The Goan makeover
If you’re in Goa this New Year’s eve, don’t forget to check into popular 17-year old hotspot, A Reverie at Calangute, that presents itself in a new avatar with changed menu and décor.

The restaurant has played host to Mumbai’s popular faces including Hrithik Rohan, Shilpa Shetty, Yuvraj Singh and Nandita Mahatani. The new look includes large wooden front doors that open on to a long, white corridor decorated with contemporary art and a tree-lined outdoor courtyard.
Previously inspired by global flavours, the menu has now taken on a more Goan hue. Pick from the Chorizo Bao (Steamed Bao with Spicy Goan sausage filling), The Birds And The Bees (compressed boneless chicken wings with a vindaloo and teriyaki glaze) or try the dessert The Egg But No Egg, which looks like different preparations of egg but does not contain it.
A slice of Japan in the city
Buzz is that Bahrain’s popular Japanese restaurant, Ruka, brainchild of restaurateur Raj Shetty is all set to open here next week.
Ruka’s outpost in Bahrain
Located at Ramee Guestline Hotel in Juhu, the fine-dine space will serve traditional Japanese cuisine including the sushi, sashimi and flavoured lobsters.
