Yesterday was World Sparrow Day, and in case you wonder why these little birds deserve a day all to themselves, the reality is that their numbers are dwindling.

Among the activities being undertaken by nature and conservation groups, is an I Love Sparrows programme by the Nature Forever Society, to be held at Oberoi Mall in Goregaon East today and tomorrow (March 21 and 22) from noon onwards. Besides getting information about sparrows, you can also have a selfie taken with the “Sparrow Man”, and buy bird feeders and nest boxes to help the little twitterers.
For young minds who want to know more about sparrows, there is a two-hour activity organised at the Bombay Port Trust (Subah Upvan), Colaba on March 28, from 5pm to 7pm. This is for the age group 4-8 years. For registration and more details, contact email nitya@wildnest.in or call 99670 56674.
Church urges faithful to rise
The Archdiocese of Bombay has released a documentary which is set to be shown at all parishes across the city. This comes in the wake of the brutal gang-rape of a Catholic nun in West Bengal last week.
The 71-year-old nun hails from the city and there has been widespread protest with human chains organised and peaceful protest around parishes in Mumbai. When this diaryist visited St Michael’s Church, Mahim recently, the four-minute documentary was shown stressing the need to do good and fight against injustice.
The short film stresses on free will, the need to do good of man, how not listening to the voice within leads one to sin and to harm others. It also explains the rise of prophets in the modern world and the need to listen to their voices and fight injustice.

While on the subject of cricket (which we are, these days), and seeing that willow jokes are quite the thing, this little nugget caught our eye. Two rival cricketers were talking. One boasted, “The team wants me to play for them very badly.” The other guy shot back, “Well, you're just the man for the job!”
Don’t worry, be happy
Smiley, happy people that was the scene at Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2015 at Palladium Hotel on Friday. Perhaps because it wasn’t Friday the 13th, when things could get scary, but the Friday that was declared as International Day of Happiness.
Bollywood babe Kalki Koechlin, who always looks very happy, seemed happier still as she entered the main show area and happily posed for the shutterbugs (who also looked very happy indeed). Sitting in the front row was art gallery owner Kavita Sachdev, the lovely lady with the curly hair and infectious smile and she was smiling a lot as she took a smiling selfie with her friend (also looking happy).
Incidentally, Kavita was dressed in a cool white top and an ultra-short black mini-skirt, displaying her happy legs. The stream of happy people continued with Divya Palat and Manasi Scott and Shveta Salve who was dressed in a colourful creation with matching smile.
Then there was Monica Dogra, happy face, hat and all. However, she was requested to take off her hat during the show as it was coming in the way for a clean view to those sitting by her side. She readily and happily obliged, hat neatly placed on her lap.
Don’t know whether it was our imagination but the models on the catwalk seemed to be happy without a care in the world, not tired with all that legwork during the last two days and nights, they were all glowing as they glided down the long ramp. And the music during the fashion shows in the main show area was happy and peppy with a merry mix of English, Hindi and French.
You may have not understood the lyrics but you sure got that happy vibe as the music wafted into the air and warmed the cockles of your heart. Guests seemed happy as they relished the happy food at the bountiful buffet counters and had a drink in the lounges or just an ice cream that happily trickled down their throats. All in all, the cheer factor was well and truly present.
