The BMC is mulling over providing peanuts and gram as part of the mid-day meal to students.

This comes after the civic body's earlier plan to provide chikki failed to take off.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner (education) Milind Sawant said the proposal was in the planning phase.

After a series of food poisoning incidents in 2012, the BMC had decided to replace flavoured milk in mid-day meals with a 30-gram chikki bar. There are about 3.7 lakh students in BMC's primary and secondary schools.

A senior civic official from the education department said, "We were not able to find a supplier for 15 tons of chikki for students. No company can supply such a huge quantity. So, now, we are considering gram and peanuts. We are working out all the aspects - quality, quantity, nutrient level, and at what time to provide it to students." The official added, "After finalising this, we will be able to estimate the requirement and cost. Soon, we will float tenders."
