The incident
According to the police, the victim is an MBA student, working at a private firm in Vile Parle. After attending classes at Malad West, she would take the auto rickshaw to go home everyday. Last week, Upadhyay was standing at the rickshaw stand outside the classes and dropped the victim to her house. The next day, he again waited for her and dropped her home. He also shared his mobile number with the girl and asked her to save it in case she ever required an auto rickshaw.
On Wednesday night, the victim took the same auto rickshaw at 10 pm. After crossing Kandivli, the accused started asking why she hadn’t called him on his mobile. He didn’t stop at her building, and instead took her towards Mahavir Nagar and molested her at an isolated spot. The girl managed to hit him with her bag and fled the spot. Later, she filed an abduction and molestation complaint at the Charkop police station.
The police traced Upadhyay’s whereabouts from the mobile number he had given the victim and arrested him from his residence yesterday. The accused will be produced at the Holiday court today.
