Many of those celebrating New Year’s Eve would be wary of the reaction of family members on returning home late at night. But for one such party-goer, the reaction was so extreme that he had to pay for it with his life.

According to MIDC Police, the deceased, Kamal Singh Mehra (22), stayed with his cousin Shankar Mehra (26). On Thursday night, when Kamal returned to their home in Andheri around 12.30 am, after celebrating at a New Year’s party with his friends, Shankar asked him why he was late. Kamal told him the reason but Shankar did not believe him. They had a quarrel over this.

Police said Shankar went to the kitchen to get a knife and, in a fit of rage, stabbed Kamal in his chest, killing him on the spot.

Shankar fled after killing Kamal. After some time, a neighbour noticed that the flat’s door was open and there were some blood stains on the floor. He entered the flat and found Kamal’s body lying in a pool of blood. He immediately informed the cops. MIDC Police nabbed Shankar at Andheri railway station.

The deceased, Kamal, had completed a degree in engineering a few months ago and had come to the city looking for a job, while Shankar works as a chef in a hotel in Mumbai.

Shankar was booked under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC and was produced in the court.
