So, how do you spell 'propinquity'? For a bunch of school students, a spelling competition held on Friday at Manik Sabhagriha at Bandra Reclamation was tougher than appearing for their board exams. Almost 6,000 Mumbai kids participated in Spelling 2010, a competition, and came away feeling like underachievers because they couldn't spell 'psephology', 'eavesdrop', 'barbecue' and 'calisthenics'.

What's worse, even parents and teachers found it tough to spell some of the words. The competition was the Mumbai chapter of an all-India event held across Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, New Delhi, Lucknow, Kanpur and Jaipur. In Mumbai, students from over 75 schools signed up for the test that aimed to test English vocabulary skills of students from class eight to ten.

The winning school team was from St. Mary Immaculate Girls High School, Bandra, and each of the three members from the team won a cash price of Rs 10,000 apart from a trophy, gift hampers and a certificate. Convent of Jesus and Mary in Colaba, and the B A F Petit Girls High School from Bandra were runners up.
