Fear of nightmares isn't giving sleepless nights to Wadala residents. The constant thud, thump and clunk of heavy goods vehicles plying over the crater-filled Rafi Ahmed Kidwai road have ensured that most residents are unable to catch a wink. The sleep-deprived locals have written to the civic body complaining about the issue but to no avail.
Locals rue that instead of repairing the road, the civic body does a patchwork job every year, during the monsoon. A resident of Jawhar Baug building from this locality said, "There's a constant stream of traffic on this stretch. The loud thump and thuds continue well into the morning making it impossible for most residents to sleep. There are numerous residential buildings dotting this stretch, but there's no room for putting up barriers to contain the noise. Why should the residents suffer because civic authorities are too lazy to work?"
Echoing similar thoughts, another resident of the locality said, "The entire road is made of concrete, but whenever they dig it up for any kind of underground work, instead of concretising it, the BMC workers pile paver blocks on those patches. Since this road is regularly used by heavy goods vehicles, especially, in the early hours of the day, the noise is unbearable."
A civic activist from the area, Nikhil Desai, said, "Every time we raise this paver blocks issue with the BMC, we are told it's a temporary fix. They tell us the roads would be repaired soon. How can a temporary fix be allowed to remain for over a year? Why doesn't the BMC repair the road and keep its promises, for once? On Kidwai road, there are multiple potholes and the noise from them is causing a lot of discomfort to local residents. Should these people consider relocating just because the BMC isn't reacting to their plight? And this loose paver blocks issue is a matter of concern across the city."
Speaking to mid-day, Keshav Unable, the BMC ward officer for F/North ward, said, "I will look into the matter and forward the issue to the department concerned."
