Mumbai: Domestic helps nabbed for looting Rs 69 lakh

Just 24 hours after valuables worth Rs 68.89 lakh was stolen from a stockbroker's house in Malabar Hill, police arrested two people, Raghav Yadav (21) and Sanjit Thakur (28), for their involvement in the incident. The arrested accused worked as domestic helps in the house. Police have recovered goods worth Rs 61.44 lakh from them.

The stockbroker, who lives at Walkeshwar Road, was preparing for Lakshmi Puja on October 30 when the incident took place. He had left the flat with his family for Chopda Puja around 6 pm. On returning, they found the wooden cupboard broken and cash and jewellery worth R68.89 lakh stolen.

They immediately informed the Malabar Hill police station. CCTV cameras were checked but no movement was found in the area during that time. When police talked to the family members, they said that two servants had left work in the house in the last six months. Police registered a case against unknown persons under sections 454, 457 and 380 of IPC.

Meanwhile, police got information that two persons were seen in Prem Nagar and Banganga carrying heavy bags. "After getting specific information, our team reached Prem Nagar area and started searching houses. Thereafter, we found Raghav and Sanjit in a shanty," said senior inspector Bhaskarrao Sawant. "During interrogation they claimed innocence, but later we found the valuables hidden in their room," he added.

Raghav has worked as a domestic help at the complainant's house for four years, while Sanjit used to work as a cook. Sanjit left the work six months back whereas Raghav left it just one-and-a-half month ago. "Raghav claimed that his mother was very ill and hence he was in dire need of money," said an officer.
