In spite of repeated warnings, Mumbaikars don't seem to take theu00a0 efforts of the Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) to curb drunken driving seriously.
In a 'Don't drink and drive' campaign conducted by the MTP last night, 106 people were booked across the city. The drive was conducted at 25 spots across the city, including Colaba, Mahalaxmi, Bandra, Mahim and Andheri. "By now, people know that every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday we conduct the drive between 11 pm to 1 am. But we still catch at least 100 offenders and there is hardly any drop in drunken driving cases," said Senior PI Rohidas Dusare, MTP.
From February, the MTP has been booking the co-passengers too, though they were sober. However, no co-passengers were booked last night. The offenders will be produced in court today.
Meanwhile, the MTP is spreading the message of traffic rules via screens fixed on mobile traffic vans.
The screens display messages like 'don't talk on mobile while driving', 'fasten seat belts', 'use helmet while riding', 'no honking', 'no overtaking' and 'don't drink and drive', etc. The MTP also has tips for you this monsoon like not to speed in rains, check the tyres in monsoon, etc. "The traffic vans will help us reach out to more people," said a traffic official.
