mid-day had reported on November 29 on how Netain, who had attacked the main accused of the Malegaon blast, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, was found lying in a pool of blood outside her home near Imambada, Azami Nagar, Malwani Gate No 7 at 5.30 am on Saturday.
Due to the fact that the deceased had 13 cases of assault registered against her, tracing her killer is like finding a needle in a haystack, say the police. The female goon went by many names — Mumtaz Begum Rashid Sheikh alias Mamta Baljit Singh alias Tejkaur alias Netain (53). Sources from the local police station say that everyone in the area used to dislike her.
That makes it difficult to recognise any probable accused till now, say the cops. The police say that the deceased had registered 43 complaints against several people and now all of them are being questioned. As Netain was involved in several extortion cases, the police are interrogating several contractors from the area.
According to sources, the cops have questioned 150 people until now. This list includes both neighbours and contractors. Now the police are collecting all the call data records and studying them to check how many mobiles were active in the area at the time of the incident.
Taking into account the details from the crime scene and the circumstances of the murder, the police suspect that a contract killer might have carried out the crime. Netain was murdered on Saturday early morning when the area was almost empty. She was externed by the police on three instances — in 1998, 2009 and 2015 — and she was barred from entering Mumbai and Thane.
During this time, she had illegally entered the city three times and was booked. The goon had three charges registered against her under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act (MPDA). Apart from the 13 cases of assault, she also had six cases of extortion against her.
