With 3 of their hostel mates being accused in the TISS rape case, all others at the ISH hostel are suddenly being subjected to intense parental scrutiny

The rape of the American student at TISS has shaken the lives of all students at the International Students Hostel (ISH) in Churchgate. They are now paying the price of their hostel mates' alleged crime.

After the news that three of the six accused Anish Borkataki, Jaskaran Singh and Vinamra Soni in the case lived at ISH emerged, parents of the other students at the hostel have begun calling the authorities and visiting them to keep a check on their children.

Said one hostel administrator, "Since we got the news of the rape, parents of other students have started coming by to see their children. Some are calling us to check on the whereabouts of their children."

Stricter rules

The hostel first became aware that their students were allegedly involved in the case at around 4 am on Wednesday, when the Trombay police picked up Anish from the hostel. Jaskaran and Vinamra had left the hostel the previous evening.

The ISH has since tightened its rules. Girls are no longer be allowed in the hostel canteen. Strict action will be taken against those who smoke anywhere in the hostel premises, including the canteen and the lifts, said a hostel administrator, adding that the new notice would be put up soon.

However, the warden, Dr Dhaneshwar Harichandan, denied any knowledge of these new rules. "The notice might have come from the pro-vice chancellor's office. I have not received it yet."

Anish is an MA Part-I (Numismatics and Archeology) student at Alkesh Dinesh Modi Institute of Management in Kalina

Jashkaran is a TYBCom student from HR College

Vinamra is a TYBCom student from Jai Hind College
