Power outage leaves parts of central Mumbai in the dark

Power outage in Mumbai is not a common occurrence, with the metropolis enjoying 24-hour power supply. However, there was no electricity supply in parts of the island city for nearly 10 hours on Friday.

Due to some technical issues plaguing two of the three transformers at the BEST Undertaking's Wadala substation, some parts of Prateeksha Nagar and Antop Hill faced power outage.

Sources said that the fault in the first transformer was seen late night of April 23-24 while the second fault was seen during early morning on April 24. Transformers inside the substation take the electricity from the transmission lines and then it gets further distributed to residential and commercial complexes.

"It seems that the ongoing road work lead to damage to these power cables which led to the disruption," said a BEST official on condition of anonymity. The BEST then had to place generators to begin repair work. One of the transformers was repaired by 6pm and work on the other one will be done by midnight.

On Thursday, there had been a similar outage at Kurla and Chunabhatti while there were power supply issues in Dadar and nearby areas on April 22
