School to get rid of forgotten tiffin boxes

The Ecole Mondial World School in Juhu has issued a circular to all parents, asking them to ensure that all tiffins are removed from the school premises at the end of the day.

The move is aimed at maintaining hygiene levels in the school and as a security measure. If the parents fail to adhere to the rules, the school says the tiffins would either be donated to charity or disposed of.

The school has lockers on every floor for students.

"Such a rule is bound to instill some discipline among students. But kids tend to forget things in school and therefore, the punishment should not be so strict," said a parent on the condition of anonymity.

Nipun Sharma, an ex-student of the school who passed out in 2007, says forgotten tiffins raised a stink in the corridor.

"A child once forgot his tiffin box in his locker and lost his keys. He later went on a holiday while the tiffin box remained in the locker.

This led to a bad odour in corridors. The school has probably issued a circular to prevent such a situation."

When contacted, authorities refused comment to on the issue. "It's a sensitive issue and we wouldn't like to discuss anything about it. Our principal Finbarr O' Regan has introduced the rule," said an authority from the school.

Tiffin services at Ecole Mondial resumed on February 2 after they were stopped for security purpose. M P Sharma, director, G D Somani School, Colaba, who had stopped tiffin services in the last two years for security reasons said , "Lockers are meant to keep books and not tiffin boxes and will definitely result in bad odour if students forget. This must be a disciplinary move."
