Mujib Usman Karjatkar (35), additional superintendent of police, GRP headquarters at Nagpur, shot himself dead on Wednesday after a failed extra-marital affair with Jamila Shaikh, a steno-typist in the office of additional commissioner of police (south region), Pune.
Preliminary inquires carried out by the Ajni police station in Nagpur revealed that Karjatkar shot himself with his service revolver at 11.45 pm.
He was rushed to a medical college nearby where the doctors declared him dead.
Sources revealed that it was a passing affair, but when Jamila started sending Karjatkar romantic messages, he got scared.
Karjatkar's suicide note states that he took the step because Jamila had been harassing him and his wife by sending SMSes for the past few months.
A police team from Ajni police station will be leaving for Pune to record Jamila's statement.
When contacted by MiD DAY, Jamila refused to comment on her alleged relationship with Karjatkar, saying she was in a hospital.
However, Fauzia, Karjatkar's wife, said, "Jamila has ruined my family. I want justice."
Jamila had registered a police complaint with Vishrambaug police station in Pune on February 17 stating that Fauzia's relatives had been making threatening calls on her mobile.
Senior Inspector C D Jadhav said he was investigating the complaint. Karjatkar was transferred from the Buldhana district to Nagpur two months back.
A gold medallist in MSc (Agriculture), Karjatkar joined the police force eight years ago and had topped the Maharashtra Public Service Examinations. His first posting in the force was at Pune during which he got acquainted with Jamila.

Excerpts of Suicide note in English
I, M U Karjatkar, presently working as Additional Commissioner Police, Nagpur Railway Police, am writing this in full control of my faculties.
My wife Fauzia has been receiving call on her mobile 98220688xx from Jamila Shaikh (steno), Additional Commissioner of Police, South Region, Pune who threatened to defame her and leveled false allegations against her. My mobile 99217990xx is in my trouser pocket.
Firstly, either on January 12 or 13 Jamila sent a message to me stating I am missing you (first mistake), after that she kept calling my wife repeatedly and threatened to defame her and harassed her day in day out by telling her false stories.
On January 17, Jamila came to my rented apartment in Pune, when my wife was alone and troubled her for almost three hours and thus interfering in my married life.
I am scared of false accusations being leveled against me. I am doing wrong.
Jamila Shaikh should be held responsible under 306 (IPC) and should be booked under other relevant sections of the IPC.
My wife is not involved, she is innocent.
