A Russian cargo aircraft carrying six passengers and two crewmembers breached Indian air space at Pune yesterday.

It was immediately escorted to Mumbai airport by two Indian Air Force aircraft and landed at 10.15 pm.

Security forces and fire brigades then surrounded the Russian aircraft.

The aircraft is a similar to AN-26, which was used in the Purulia arms-dropping case in 1995.

The plane belongs to Volga Dnepr Company. It took off from Diego Garcia and the code 813 specifies that it was bound to Kadahar.

These are USSR planes which are now used by the Russian mafia for smuggling purposes.

Chief PRO of Defence in Mumbai, Captain Manohar Nambiar, confirmed the incident and said, "Violation of airspace has taken place, but it isn't clear whether or not it was intentional."

The plane was said to be coming from Pakistan air space and didn't have the right code to enter Indian airspace. The spokesperson for MIAL too confirmed the incident.
