Announces 24 draws a week from the present six to generate more revenue, decides to webcast the process

In a move that promises to amplify your chances of winning the lottery, the state has decided to quadruple the number of draws from the current six in a week to 24.

And although your winnings may be determined by the intricate permutations and combinations that the enlarged numbers dictate, the government is certain to generate four times the revenue it does now, not just from the sale of more tickets but also by taxing the ones sold.

Furthermore, given the distended scale now, the lottery department has announced that it will webcast the entire process of opening the draws, to ensure more transparency in the distribution of the winnings.

u00a0"Some of the draws of lotteries were being broadcast on television. So we decided to put in place a system to webcast the draw process and make it transparent," the lottery official added.

The new math was introduced after the Union Government allowed the state to push up the number of lottery draws.

"Since the Union Government has expressly permitted the state to increase the number of draws, we have decided to go ahead with it.

This will allow the state to generate more revenue," said an official from the finance department.

Presently, the state earns around Rs 75 crore by way of revenue from the sale of and from the tax imposed on lotteries belonging to other states sold in Maharashtra.

With the increase in the number of draws, the revenue generated may go up to Rs 300 crore, estimates officials.

Lotteries also have become increasingly popular and from 50,000-55,000 tickets, the number has increased to 1,00,000 tickets.
