THE late-night discovery of a suitcase containing a woman's body on Monday has sent the police into a tizzy.
While some officials are scouring CCTV footage of all railway stations from Badlapur to Sandhurst Road for clues, others have been deployed to find out which shop the suitcase, which looked new, was bought from.
MiD DAY's report on January 16
The victim, a girl believed to be around 25 years old, was four months pregnant and had been raped before being strangulated. Her body was found at Sandhurst Road station at 2 am on Monday.
Senior Inspector A Jadhav of the CST police station said, "The girl's body was not decomposed and it looked like the murder was carried out a few hours before the suitcase was found.
The train started from Badlapur and was supposed to reach CST at 2 am and, hence, we are checking the footage of stations between Badlapur and Sandhurst road to see if we can get a glimpse of the accused carrying the suitcase."
"Some stations have three or four cameras each and one of our men is going through footage from all of them for a 90-minute duration because the accused must have travelled in the local train for not more than one-and-a-half-hours," he added.
Officials said markets are also being checked to find out where the suitcase was bought from. Police teams are also asking people at markets and at railway stations whether they saw somebody carrying a similar suitcase on the day of the murder.
Missing person?
Meanwhile, after police released a photo and description of the girl, many members of families in which women have gone missing contacted them to see the body.
A person from Delhi, whose relative has been missing for four months, also called up the police and said he would came down to the city to look at the body.
The body of another girl was found stuffed in a suitcase in Juhu on March 10, but police have dismissed rumours of a serial killer being on the prowl.
