This city will always be Aamchi Mumbai for them, but when it comes to finding love, Maharashtrians are more than willing to move out of their beloved city. Data from marathimatrimony.com has revealed that more than 75 per cent Mumbaikars are willing to look for marriage matches outside the state, even though it would mean relocating from the city of dreams.

There are currently as many as 2 lakh registered users on marathimatrimony.com, a matchmaking service from Bharat Matrimony for Maharashtrians. Data from the site revealed fascinating insights into how the community chooses to get married and what its preferences are.

Mumbaikars are the top users of the portal, and the data shows how open they are when it comes to finding a partner. The most striking finding is that a majority of Mumbaikars would not mind relocating after marriage, with 76.9 per cent women and 87.4 per cent men willing to look for a match outside the state.

Raju Rajasekar, general manager (marketing) at the portal, said, "This is registered user data specifically for Mumbaikars. We believe a broader mindset and pragmatic outlook might be the reasons they are open to partners outside the state." The portal is also used by Maharashtrians living outside the state, with Bengaluru, Goa, Belgaum, Hyderabad, and Vadodara among the top cities.

The community also displayed a trend of being independent and taking charge of their love life. While 57.8 per cent women signed up for the matrimonial service themselves, among the men, 80.8 per cent were self-registered. For community members living outside the state, the numbers stood at 49.6 per cent and 74.3 per cent, respectively. The community also showed a marked preference for checking profiles and matches on the app (76 per cent users) instead of desktop.

Women more learned
The data also pointed to growing independence and broadening mindsets among women. While a majority of the users (65.3 per cent) are men, it is the women who are more educated and broad-minded. In terms of educational qualification, 13.36 per cent women had a master's degree, compared to just 6.92 per cent men. Even at the graduate level, there are marginally more women (29.66 per cent) with a bachelor's degree than men (29.18 per cent). The top profession listed by women is software professional, while among men, it is business owner/entrepreneur.

When it came to their beliefs and value system, 12.05 per cent Maharashtrian women said they were liberal, while 2.45 per cent said they were conservative. The remaining users fell in a spectrum of traditional to moderate beliefs. Among the men, on the other hand, 10.6 per cent said they were liberal, while 6.7 per cent said they were conservative.

Success story
Apurva Mhatre, 29, a digital marketer, found her life partner through the portal five years ago, and is now happily married. Unlike most of the female users, she was adamant on finding a match in Mumbai. "I wanted to find someone who was from around here, and I was very lucky to find the right person. Maybe other people opt to migrate because they want a better lifestyle somewhere else, in another city or state," she said.

On all other points though, Apurva agrees with the findings, saying she too had registered on her own. "It was either that, or have one of my relatives find a groom for me. I wanted to find someone with an engineering background, as even I have one. I believed this would help us to connect on an intellectual level."

Talking about the men having more orthodox values, she said: "Orthodox might be a negative word... but they definitely have stronger family values than women. People need to have strong family values, and their better halves should respect that."
