Dirty platforms and roach-riddled long distance trains running on the Central line have overnight become spick and span and insect-free, respectively, courtesy the cleanliness drive of the Central Railway (CR).

CR general manager Kul Bhushan has assigned HOD rank officers with the task of overseeing cleanliness of one station and one train each.

at all major stations and in long distance trains

Officers of the rank of joint and additional secretary will be overseeing the cleanliness drive at all major stations such as CST, Dadar, Kurla, Thane and Kalyan and in long distance trains such as Vidarbha Express and Punjab Mail.

"The officers are also supposed to conduct a review meeting with the GM every month and update him on the drive.

If they have any innovative idea which could help expedite the drive, they are welcome to discuss it with the GM," said a senior railway official.

He added that the role of the officers was discussed widely. "It was practically impossible to maintain all the 59 stations falling under the CR for a handful of officers.

So, we decided to assign each HOD with the job of overseeing the cleanliness of one station and one train passing through the Central line.

There will be no more blame game between the officials as every one is well aware of his responsibility and area," he added.

To start with, officials have been assigned for the major stations where mobility of passengers is more.
The official in question will have to ensure that basic amenities are available at the station.

Besides, the official will have to keep an eye on the upkeep of waiting rooms, lights, fans, clocks, train indicators, ticket vending machines and tracks.

There are at least 17 HODs at the CR headquarters and all of them have been assigned the stations and trains. Z A Siddiqui, the chief commercial manager, has been assigned the CST station.

"It's a great experience. I make it a point to walk around in the station every day. There are other works also in the pipeline," said Siddiqui.

M C Chauhan, the divisional railway manager, CR, who has been given the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, said, "This is a great initiative by the GM.

I have installed a CCTV camera in my cabin and I monitor the platforms and trains from my office only. Also, I visit the station in person once in a fortnight."

A K Singh, the public relations officer of the CR, said, "Since the drive started last month cleanliness and other things have alarmingly improved at all the stations.

We are getting the good response from the passengers also."
