A three-storey building at Thakurli in Thane district collapsed on Tuesday night, in which nine people have lost their lives so far and several persons are feared trapped

Thane: A three-storey building at Thakurli in Thane district collapsed on Tuesday night, in which nine people have lost their lives and several persons are feared to have been trapped, an official said.

"The building 'Matru Chhaya' crashed at about 10.40 pm following heavy downpour. A massive relief and rescue operation has begun and so far three injured persons have been rescued and rushed to the hospital," Regional Disaster Management Committee (RDMC) chief Santosh Kadam said.

Over ten people have also been injured in the incident. 16 people were pulled out of the debris after the collapse which took place last night.

Fire brigade teams from Thane, Kalyan, Bhiwandi, and Ambernath have been rushed to the site, he said.

At least 12 fire engines have been rushed to the spot and 15 people were pulled out of the rubble of the three-decade old structure that collapsed.

Heavy rains, narrow approach and power breakdown hampered relief and rescue efforts and top police and civilian officials were present on the spot.
