The 4-day-old boy, who was found alive near the smashed-in body of a still-unidentified woman in Vasai last week, succumbed to his critical condition yesterday. He was first admitted to the Vasai-Virar Mahanagar Palika Hospital and later shifted to the Patriot Hospital, where he died while being treated.
Even though a week has gone by since locals discovered the boy and his lifeless mother with her head bashed in at a rundown house in the Navjivan area, the mother is yet to be identified. The Vasai division police officer PSI Ranjit Shirsat confirmed the baby’s death.

The locals had discovered the murder scene after being drawn there by the incessant cries of a baby. The police reached the spot at around 5.30 pm and rescued the infant, who was then admitted to the hospital for a medical examination. The police also sent the mother’s body for post-mortem.
Primary investigations revealed that the woman had been murdered in the morning. “We have registered a murder case and are scanning records of missing women in a similar age group to identify the deceased. Meanwhile, the Waliv police are conducting investigations to locate the killer,” said PSI Shirsat.
