Mumbai suburban commuters can now expect better security as the Western Railway has come up with an Integrated Security Plan worth Rs 97.5 crore.

"As part of the plan, 2,000 cameras would be installed on railway stations under the CCTV surveillance system costing Rs 87 crore," WR General Manager RN Verma said on Friday.

"Rs 15 lakh would be spent on 10 bullet-proof morchas (pickets), Rs eight crore on x-ray baggage scanners, Rs 57 lakh on five portable x-ray baggage scanners," he said.

Similarly, explosive vapour detectors and bomb disposal equipment would also be in place soon, he added. The chief purpose of the ISP, to be implemented on BOOT basis, is to equip the Railway security personnel better to deal with contingencies.

Regarding security arrangements in ladies' compartments, Verma said it was not possible to provide security personnel in all the compartments, as there was shortage of security men.
