Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi took a small detour from his itinerary on the first day of his two-day visit to city for a popular eatery in Malad, suburban Mumbai.

It may have been a small detour for the young Gandhi scion, but it was a big moment for Ronnie D'Souza, the proprietor of the joint -- Uncle's Kitchen. Ronny was bursting with excitement after meeting the 45-year-old politician. Describing the meet as 'a memory of lifetime', he gushed about 'down-to-earth' Congress leader.

Accompanied by Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam, Rahul Gandhi cut a calm figure amidst the frenzy around him.

"His visit was all of a sudden. It wasn't planned at all. He was at his party meet after which he dropped by," he told mid-day.

Ronnie's voice quivered with exhilaration and didn't wane even when he admitted that he couldn't offer the Gandhi scion much to eat as the kitchen had closed. "The kitchen was about to close. It is unfortunate that he came at this time but he is a gentleman. Despite being such a big public figure, he had no starry airs and didn't throw tantrums."

When prodded about the kind of person that Rahul is, Ronnie said, "He is wonderful, wonderful guy. He is so down-to-earth. He spoke to everyone - be it the cooks or helpers. People here had gathered just to see him. He is unbelievable. We have had lots of celebs visiting our place but this is one moment which I will really cherish."

Celebrities including Mithun Chakraborty, Raza Murad, music director Pritam, Mohnish Behl and Suresh Oberoi are believed to be regulars.

Rahul addressed a meeting of party workers in Malad before leaving to inaugurate Murli Deora Hall at the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee office in south Mumbai.

On January 16, he will interact with students of a management institute in the western suburb of Vile Parle and later participate in a 'padyatra' from Bandra Bandstand to Dharavi slum.
