Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) team of Mumbai Customs arrested an Indian woman on Monday while she was attempting to smuggle in 3.5 kilograms of gold bars woth approximately Rs 83 lakh into the country. Customs officials nabbed the woman, Fathi Muthu Rubina with passport number -G0328195, at the international airport in Mumbai.

Rubina, who hails from Kasargod, Kerala, arrived in Mumbai from Dubai by Jet Airways flight on Monday morning. Rubina was intercepted after a personal search led to the recovery of 30 tola bars. The yellow metal totally weighed 3495 grams and is valued at Rs. 83, 41, 604. Rubina had concealed these gold bars in three small plastic containers and kept in her undergarment. Investigations revealed that the passenger is a frequent flyer. She was subsequently arrested.
Rubina has reportedly confessed to her crime. Rubina was released on bail with Rs. 1.5 lakh of cash surety. “Since the matter is under investigations we can't say anything as of now,” said an AIU official, close to the development.
“We have had few cases where the entire family, including the women and children, were involved in gold smuggling. However, many aspects are being looked at in this case,” said a Mumbai Custom official.
Commenting on the case the officer said, “More than 75 per cent cases of smuggling involved individuals from the Kasargod and Kozhikode districts of Kerala, followed by Bhatkal in Karnataka. According to Rubina’s passport details, the 39-year-old woman hails from Kasargod in Kerala."
