Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani gets vaccinated

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s Health department’s additional municipal commissioner, Suresh Kakani, took a step to motivate civic workers and got vaccinated on Monday. With the BMC increasing its vaccination capacity day by day, it will soon start the process to give the second dose to those who have taken the first one.

While initially there were doubts on the administration of the second dose, the civic body claims that it has enough doses for round two and is also expecting the third consignment soon. According to health officials, with each person vaccinated, their second dose has to be kept in reserve. The BMC has 2.65 lakh doses, of which 82,000 have been given.

As the drive started on January 16, the second dose would be up in a week’s time. The BMC claims that there is no compulsion of the interval being 28 days, but it is the minimum requirement. Sources also revealed that giving the second dose will also depend on the government’s instructions.

On Monday, another civic-run peripheral hospital was added to the list of vaccination centres, taking the total to 21 and 114 units were in operation for 8,550 health and front line workers expected to turn up. The turnout was 83 per cent. Around seven minor adverse effects cases were reported and the recipients were discharged in 30 minutes.

Civic officials said that many police personnel turned up for the vaccine along with many aanganwadi workers. The number of registered frontline workers is over 1.8 lakh. Kakani said, “The response has been good enough so far. My experience was also overwhelming as it was a great feeling and there was absolutely no prick or any side effects.”
