After a two-day respite, both the city and state saw a sharp spike in daily COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. While Maharashtra saw more than 8,000 fresh infections, Mumbai recorded 1,167 new cases. Even the deaths recorded across the state over the last 24 hours have been the highest in the last one-and-a-half months.

With the state recording 8,807 new infections, Maharashtra’s total tally reached 21.21 lakh. The total number of COVID-related deaths recorded in the state over the past 24 hours is 80, with the total toll hitting 51,937.
The Thane Municipal Corporation area, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivli Corporation area in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) reported 174, 149 and 163 cases respectively.
The state’s recovery rate stands at 94.70 per cent with 2,772 patients discharged on Wednesday. Mumbai’s recovery rate also stands at 94 per cent while the doubling rate has dropped to 284 days owing to the increase in number of cases over the past couple of days. The city’s overall growth rate too has increased in the last one week and it currently stands at 0.24 per cent. The total cases count of the city now stands at 3.21 lakh and a total of 31.85 lakh tests have been carried out so far. The city has 8,320 active cases.
However, the state’s mortality rate has dropped and is 2.45 per cent currently. Till date, a total of 51,937 people have died due to COVID-19 across the state. The number of deaths due to other causes in the state is 1,201. These deaths are of patients who tested positive but turned negative later and died due to other complications.
Meanwhile, a total of 1.59 crore laboratory samples have been collected across the state, out of which 21.21 lakh have tested positive with a 13.31 per cent positivity ratio. According to the state government’s data, there were 80 COVID-related deaths in the state. Nagpur reported the highest number of deaths at 12. A total of 21 deaths were reported in the MMR with Mumbai recording four, Navi Mumbai 10, Thane 1 and KDMC and Panvel recording three deaths each. According to civic officials, of the four deaths, three patients were suffering from other ailments and all were senior citizens.
