Thane: A 65-year-old man was on Monday brutally killed and his wife severely wounded when some unidentified assailants attacked the couple who were sleeping in a shed near their house in Kalyan in Thane, police said on Monday.

According Police PRO Sukhada Narkar, the incident took place in the wee hours around 3.15 am in Beturkar Pada, they said.
The duo-- Lahu Narayan Beturkar and his wife Jayanai Lahu Beturkar (58)-- was fast asleep when some assailants attacked the old man with a sickle inflicting several wounds on his head and chest killing him instantly, police said.
The attackers did not spare his wife and also attacked her with the same sickle on her face and other body parts, leaving her seriously injured. The woman was admitted to a local hospital later.
The Bazarpeth Police has registered an offence under sections 302, 307 of the IPC and Section 4 and 25 of the Arms Act, police said.
The couple own a local chawl and the motive behind the murder is still not known, police added.
