Mumbai Traffic police intensifies campaign against two-wheeler riders for breaking speed limits and performing stunts

The Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) has intensified its campaign against rash riders, most of whom were found violating speed limits at night. Though the initiative was launched on January 23, the majority of the actions were taken in the first 21 days of March.

The department registered 515 cases from January 23 to March 21, said an officer. But, 477 cases were registered between March 1 and March 21 alone, with 477 riders facing charges and the police seizing 558 two-wheelers, the officer added.
Those arrested have been booked under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.
Dindoshi recorded the highest number of cases at 39 with the seizure of 43 vehicles. Most actions in the area were taken at Western Express Highway and Film City Road, and near Oberoi Mall.
Kandivli ranked second with 38 cases, and actions were mostly taken around the highway. Sahar ranked third with 33 cases, most of which were registered around the airport area. Dahisar ranked fourth with 29 cases, followed by Mulund with 28 cases.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Pravin Padwal told mid-day, “Traffic police are taking action against riders breaking speed limits and performing stunts on the road. We appeal to all parents to tell their children to not ride two-wheelers at high speed.”
Sanjay Jadhav, a rider caught in Andheri, told mid-day that he had entered a no-entry zone by mistake as he didn’t know the road was for one-way traffic. But, Jadhav said, the speed of his bike was not too high. Faizal Shaikh, another rider, admitted he was riding rashly.
