Mumbai: After second post-mortem, boy’s family accepts body after 3 years

Sachin Jaiswar was taken for questioning on July 12, 2018

The family of Sachin Jaiswar, the 17-year-old who died in 2018, finally accepted his remains and performed the last rites on Tuesday. They had refused to claim the body alleging that police torture led to the death. Following their refusal, the body has been in JJ Hospital’s mortuary since July 21, 2018. After the Bombay High court’s order, a fresh post mortem was carried out after which the body was accepted by the family.

What happened

The Jaiswar family claimed that on the evening of July 12, a couple of cops in plainclothes came to their home in Jai Bhawani Chawl in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, Dharavi. They told them that they want to question him regarding a mobile phone theft. They then took him for questioning and let him leave the next day.

Since then Sachin complained of body pain which eventually got worse, and he was taken to Sion Hospital where he died on July 21 around 7.30pm. Doctors at the hospital allegedly told the family that Sachin died of leptospirosis. The family had refused to accept the body alleging torture and ill treatment by the police resulted in his death. They constantly demanded a police investigation and the probe was handed over to the Crime Branch. The Crime Branch submitted to police that no evidence of police torture was found.

Family goes to the HC

The family then approached the Bombay High Court. The HC on April 3 directed JJ Hospital to carry out a second post mortem and requested the Jaiswar family to claim the body after considering its condition. They agreed to accept the body after post mortem.

As the post mortem was carried out on Sunday, family claimed the body on Tuesday. The last rites were performed at Shivaji Park Crematorium. “I can’t tell you how I am feeling today. My poor son had to wait for almost three years to get a glimpse of justice. His condition was so bad that he was unrecognisable. Our family somehow managed to keep calm until now,” said Ravindra Jaiswar, Sachin's father.

The report of the fresh post mortem will be submitted to the high court at the next hearing on April 9.
