In a big relief to Mumbaikars, doctors and the BMC, the city does not have any critical Covid-19 patients. Of all the active patients, only 15 per cent are symptomatic with moderate to mild level of infection while the remaining patients are asymptomatic.

Mumbai has been reporting more than 100 cases daily over the past two weeks. As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s dashboard, there were 898 active cases in the city as of May 13. Of these patients, 135 are symptomatic while only 26 needed hospitalisation.

Covid Task Force member and director of Critical Care Medicine and ICU at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, Dr Rahul Pandit said, “It is good news for everyone that we do not have any severe patients. At present, instead of looking at the positive rate, we have to keep watch on how many patients need admission, how many need oxygen support and how many are critical. If the number is less, there is no need to worry even if the positivity rate is slightly high. The only thing we need to focus on is genome sequencing. Unfortunately, if there is any new variant found then we can identify the cluster and take action to curb the spread.”

BMC Executive Health Officer Dr Mangala Gomare said, “Though we are getting more than 100 cases per day, the number of admission is still less. The good thing is that we are not getting cases from clusters. Most of them are asymptomatic and came positive during routine testing. As of now, the situation is under control.”
