Mumbai sees rise in Covid deaths

Mumbai witnessed a drop in daily Covid-19 cases on Thursday, however, the number of fatalities from the disease and the test positivity rate (TPR) increased. The BMC reported 5,707 cases, 12 deaths and a TPR of 10.72 per cent. The state-wide tally rose marginally to 46,197.


According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) report on Thursday, around 84 per cent of the patients who turned positive on Thursday were asymptomatic. Of the 5,707 confirmed infected people, 550 were hospitalised and 79 of them have been assigned the oxygen bed.


All the 12 deceased had comorbidities. Two of the 12 patients were in the age group of 40-59 years and the remaining 10 were senior citizens. The recovery rate in the city went up to 96 per cent, with 15,440 more patients being discharged. The doubling rate improved further to 83 days.

Across Maharashtra, 37 more Covid-19 deaths were confirmed on Thursday, up from 49 the day before. The state’s case fatality rate continued to drop and was at 1.92 per cent. A total of 52,025 people were discharged during the day, leaving 2,58,569 active cases on Thursday.

Of the 46,197 new cases in the state, 12,054 were from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The Thane Municipal Corporation reported 1,064 cases, Navi Mumbai 1,300, Panvel 920, Vasai-Virar 352 and Thane city 492. Besides the 12 fatalities in Mumbai, the MMR reported 15 deaths, including five in Kalyan-Dombivli, three in Panvel and two in Navi Mumbai.

On Wednesday, 125 new Omicron cases were reported in the state. So far, 2,199 people have been confirmed to be infected with the Omicron variant of Coronavirus, including 1,144 who were discharged earlier.
