The number of senior citizens who have received their first vaccine shots in the city touched 1.05 lakh on Monday, a week after the drive to immunise the elderly population began. Monday, which was also the International Women's Day, also saw over 8,000 women getting the vaccine jabs.

Mumbai has 65 vaccination centres that can administer about 24,000 doses in a day. The centres stepped up their efforts and collectively inoculated 40,502 people, including about 30,000 senior citizens and 4,708 people who got their second shots and 3,212 people with comorbidities. This translates to a 160 per cent capacity utilisation.

Though 37 private and four central-run hospitals have started the vaccination centres, the 24 BMC centres are taking the maximum load. These civic centres injected about 25,000 shots on Monday.  More vaccines centres will be started at RA Podar Medical College and Guru Nanak Hospital in Bandra from Tuesday.

On the occasion of Women's Day, the centres had made special arrangements for women. A total of 8,092 women were vaccinated at SevenHills Hospital, BKC Jumbo Centre, Nesco Jumbo Centre, Mulund Jumbo Centre and Dahisar Jumbo Centre. At BKC, 1,982 women were vaccinated, followed by 1,932 women at the Nesco. While 1,909 women were vaccinated at SevenHills, the Dahisar and Mumbai jumbo centres inoculated 1,852 and 418 women.
