New cases in Mumbai jump to 635; Maharashtra count past 8,000

Mumbai reported 635 new Covid-19 cases and 10 deaths on Wednesday. The city’s test positivity rate jumped sharply to 1.76 per cent compared to Tuesday. State numbers also rose to over 8,000.


At the peak of the second wave, the city had reported over 11,000 cases on April 4. While TPR was 10.96 per cent on May 5, it has steadily come down. Mumbai’s doubling rate improved to 928 days on Wednesday. 


Of the fatalities in the city, five were comorbid, four were 60 years and above and as many were in the age group of 40-60 years. On Tuesday, the city had reported eight deaths. Mumbai’s recovery rate remains constant at 96 per cent, with 582 people getting discharged through the day.

As per government data, 8,602 new cases were reported in the state. After registering a four-fold rise in Covid fatalities on Tuesday, the state saw a marginal drop, with 170 succumbing to the viral infection on Wednesday. The state’s case fatality rate remains at 2.04 per cent. With the recovery of 10,978 people, there are 1.06 lakh active cases in Maharashtra.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region reported 1,801 cases, including Mumbai. Kalyan-Dombivli saw 141 fresh infections, while Raigad reported 369 cases, the most in MMR. Thane, Navi Mumbai and Vasai-Virar reported 97, 123 and 115 new cases, respectively. Excluding Mumbai, 21 people died in MMR, with 10 from Vasai-Virar. While Raigad reported  eight deaths, Palghar, Mira-Bhayandar and Kalyan-Dombivli each saw one death.
