Widening work of Eastern Express Highway in Thane to hit train services

The Kopri road-bridge is the main link between Thane and Mumbai

Widening work of the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), which runs over the Kopri road-bridge in Thane, is all set to be completed over the weekend. However, due to the work, rail services on six lines between Thane and Kurla will remain shut on the nights of January 24 and 25 from 12.30 am to 5.30 am. The Kopri road-bridge is the main link between Thane and Mumbai.

A senior railway official said, “Preparatory work has been on for quite some time and finally it will be done this weekend. All the engineers are prepared for it.”
With the girders of the new Kopri bridge arriving at the site from the workshop at Palghar last month, the overall plan envisages widening of the 796-metre-long, four-lane bridge to create an eight-lane one as part of a R250-crore project. Widening of the Kopri bridge was first proposed 14 years ago. The construction department of Central Railway is coordinating with the MMRDA for the project work.

“Work on the Kopri bridge will be completed this weekend and the Central Railway will operate a special traffic and power block on six lines between Thane and Mulund stations to launch the girders of the bridge this weekend. The block will be operated from 12.30 am to 5.30 am,” a CR spokesperson said.

The old bridge had come up in 1965. Work on upgrading and expansion of the bridge had started in April 2018 and was expected to be completed by 2021, but
the lockdown delayed the process due to shortage of labour, an official said.
