Mumbai on Sunday reported 961 fresh Covid-19 cases and one fatality, raising the tally to 10,68,936 and the death toll to 19,569. The fresh cases have been detected from 8,778 tests, which puts the positivity rate or cases per 100 tests in the metropolis at 11 per cent.
While Mumbai is on the verge of the fourth wave, suppliers have warned the BMC that they would stop the supply of medical oxygen, personal protective equipment kits and essential items due to late payment. They cited that some suppliers received payment 70-80 days after submitting bills.
Maharashtra on Saturday recorded 1,357 new Covid-19 positive cases, out of which Mumbai reported 889 new cases. Also, 329 patients were recovered today, taking the total number of recoveries in the city to 10,45,035.
The recent spike in COVID-19 cases in the city has put the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on alert. The municipal commissioner, who is also the administrator, has asked officials to ensure there is more testing and to focus on more vaccination of children and adolescents.
The second half of May saw a two-fold increase in COVID-19 cases in Mumbai even as the number of tests conducted daily remained the same. The test positivity rate (TPR) also climbed to 3.2 per cent, from 0.34 per cent in March.
Mumbai on May 30 reported 318 Covid-19 cases, the fifth day in a row when the addition to the tally was above 300, taking the infection caseload to 10,65,296, while the death toll stood unchanged at 19,566.
The city on Thursday recorded 350 new Covid-19 cases, its highest single-day count since February 11 this year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. There were no deaths related to the infection on Thursday.
