A day after SRCC cut-off made national news, college principal PC Jain defends decision
Principal of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) for 40 years, PC Jain has never had to defend himself so much. A day after college announced 100 per cent cut-off, Jain tells MiD DAY there's nothing wrong about it.
Q: SRCC cut-off has touched 100 per cent this year. Isn't this an absurd decision, considering it is first time in the history of Delhi university that one is expected to score 100 per cent to take an admission?
A: The cut-off is 96 per cent for students who are pass-outs with accounts, business studies and mathematics. That is category A. So students with commerce background need not worry. For students from non-commerce backgrounds, there is 100 per cent cut-off. And creating history by doing something for the first time is a good idea. This would benefit everyone.

Q: Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has come out strongly against the decision saying it completely irrational. What do you have to say about it?
A: I don't think that he has said anything wrong. He was speaking about education policy in general and ways to improve it. According to me, it is a positive debate which will improve the education sector.
Q: SRCC is the most preferred college among commerce students. What makes it special?
A: SRCC is an ordinary college. I simply don't understand why students run after SRCC. They should in fact take admission wherever they get it. I think we have a lot of goodwill. We have been nurturing students for many years now.
Q: What do you have to say about the new admission policy? Will it be helpful for students?
A: Everything comes with a positive as well as negative aspect. But, with this new admission policy, students will no longer have to run from one college to the other in scorching heat. With the new admission policy, touts who used to guide/misguide students have been made redundant. The process, I feel, has been simplified now, as there are no more applications. Students will just come and take admission. It has become easier for the colleges too.
Q: What is the reason for such high-cut off this year?
A: Performance of students has changed. Also, this year, with the new admission policy, all principals are cautious. We are not biased against any one and want to give equal treatment to every student.
Q: What facilities is the college offering to make it more student-friendly?
A: It is already a student-friendly college. We have air-conditioned class rooms and library. The entire compound is Wi-Fi enabled we have separate rooms for each and every teacher.We just need to work a little bit on hostels, which will be done this year.
