While the whole nation would be watching with interest as Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee presents the Union Budget 2011-12 on Monday in the Lok Sabha, Delhi University students would be looking on for a special reason. That's because the students' union at the varsity has sent a list with a seven-point agenda to the FM demanding a student-friendly budget.
Students are hopeful. "We want students to have a better life at college, a large part of which depends on the kind of facilities and funds available for them. It will be a great deal for us if the ministry considers our demands and implements it in this financial year itself," said DUSU President Jitender Choudhary.
Students residing in hostels had had a bad time during CWG as they had to vacate their rooms much before the event and could get back there a long while after the mega event had ended. Now, with the budget agenda forwarded to the FM, DU students are hoping for better prospects for them.
"We need more hostels. There is a problem for settling down for many of our outstation students. I could not get a hostel room for the entire first year as there was an acute shortage. I am staying with my friends at their hostel room," said Jatin Sharma, second-year student at Hansraj College, DU.u00a0
Even teachers at the varsity support the students' cause. "Students are facing a problem of accommodation. Large bunches of them stay in small cubicles with no proper food. Also, the girl-boy ratio for hostel accommodation is vague and imbalanced. The varsity definitely needs more hostels and better infrastructure," said SK Chakrabarty, Dean, St Stephens College.
