The Delhi University colleges seem to be helpless with the Delhi police having unearthed a fake certificate scam running in the campus. After three men were arrested in connection with this, the varsity vice chancellor said corruption in the government agencies which issue caste certificates are at fault.

Vice chancellor Dinesh Singh said: "All we can do is just be alert while dealing with those applying under the reserved category. But it is the corruption in the government agencies which is responsible for this and it is beyond our reach."u00a0
Out of the 12 students who were held for producing fake certificates, most had secured admissions in Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Hansraj College and Kirori Mal College (KMC). When asked what the college is doing to tackle the menace, SRCC principal P C Jain said: "What can we do about it? The university is not a detective agency to probe or identify the culprits. If the CBI has arrested the accused running the fake certificate business, they have done their job well."

However, Hindu College principal Vinay K Srivastava said the colleges should verify the certificates before admission. According to him, the university should set up a department which will look after verification of certificates. It should have a centralised system which will scan all documents of the students who apply under the quota system in the month of March and let the university send it to the concerned departments for rectifying them.
KMC principal Bhim Sen Singh refused to talk when confronted by MiD DAY about his earlier comments that many students who were involved in these rackets are very active in college and university politics , and know the staff well.
