R T Nagar traffic inspector H S Murali said, "Raj died on the spot, but no one took down the number as the car sped away." The accident spot is always swarming with moving vehicles, so the moment is slow. The police said that since it was not the peak hour, the vehicles were speeding.
"Someone should have given the vehicle a chase or at least noted down the number," said the official.
Police said that Raj was unmarried, and had been a resident of Infantry Road since the past 30 years. Other than a relative who is stays at Domlur, he had no other known relatives.
The police have sent the body for post mortem. Raj had one more year of service left, and was due to retire in January 2012. The R T Nagar police have filed a complaint and are investigating. They have also appealed to the general public to come forward if anyone has taken the offending vehicle's number down, and inform the police control room.
