Friends from Dhankawadi killed on the spot as jeep gets crushed between bus and truck

An accident on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway caused a second mishap that killed two people from Dhankawadi in the city. Eleven vehicles were damaged in the accidents that happened in quick succession on the lane leading towards Mumbai.

In the next accident, nine vehicles that were moving one behind the other ended up in a pile-up when the leading vehicle suddenly braked on the turn as the traffic had slowed because of the first accident and it could not negotiate the steep slope. A luxury bus was behind the first three vehicles and behind these was the ill-fated jeep in which Prathamesh Salunkhe (30) and Tulshi Borade (31) were travelling.

When the bus also braked suddenly, the jeep collided into it from behind and was sandwiched between it and a truck that was following it. Investigating Officer Pramod Kadam from the Khopoli Police Station said, "The jeep was almost flattened after being crushed between the two heavy vehicles.

Both the boys died on the spot." The bodies of the dead were handed over to their families. The truck that hit the jeep was occupied by helper Ravi (25), who the police said was refusing to give the name of the driver after he fled the accident spot.

Officials said Ravi claimed the driver had gone to a nearby hospital to treat his injured hand. According to Mangesh Pardesi, Prathamesh's neighbour, who lives in Pratiksha Nagar, Prathamesh and Tulshi were going to Khopoli to get some plants for his nursery.

Prathamesh holds a diploma in automobile engineering and worked as an engineer with an automobile firm. He was also a former ward president of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's youth wing. Prathamesh, the sole breadwinner of the family, is survived by his mother, a younger sister and grandparents. Prathamesh's father died a year-and-half ago.

Sanath Sato, another friend of Prathamesh, describes him as a goodhearted person. "He was very helpful and was very social," said Sanath. Tulshi was in the fabrication business and a native of Rasin in Ahmednagar district.
