Family says the boy had entered defence quarters in Chennai to pick some fruit when he was shot in the head

A 13-year-old boy was allegedly shot at by army personnel when he trespassed into their area at the Island Grounds locality yesterday, triggering protests from locals.

Police said Dilshan has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of a government hospital.

The family of the boy alleged he had been shot in the head when he and his friends residents of the nearby Indira Nagar went to the area, which houses army residential quarters, to pick some fruit.

Irate residents staged a protest demanding action against those responsible for the incident. City Additional Commissioner (Law and Order) P Thamaraikannan said a case had been registered and investigations were on.

Army sources said the military and local police are investigating into the incident, but declined to elaborate. Police have cordoned off a stretch of the area, adjacent to Fort St George, which houses the state secretariat.

Thamaraikannan assured reporters an the family that action would be taken against those involved in "causing injuries to the boy".

Asked whether army personnel had indeed opened fire on the boy, he said it was being investigated. Dilshan later succumbed to his injuries.

"The soldier could have warned the boys or chased them away instead of firing at them," said one of Dilshan's neighbours.
