A 15-year-old girl sustained serious spinal injuries when she fell from the second- floor balcony of her house last week. Anjali says she only remembers she went to the balcony on the night before she was found fallen. Anjali was admitted last Thursday. Her mother, Samjhana, says she usually wakes up to go to the toilet at 3 am and must have woken up for the
same. Doctors say she was probably sleep-walking, but her mother says she does not have this habit.
“Around 5 am, some neighbours, who must have woken up to get milk, began to shout saying she had fallen down. By the time we rushed there, she was almost unconscious. We brought her to Sassoon General Hospital, where the doctors immediately started treating her,” said Shankar Thapa, Anjali’s father, who work as a watchman.
The Thapas live in Undhri and hail from Manipur. While Anjali’s father is a watchman, her mother is a maid. The monthly income of the family is Rs 8,000, of which Rs 3,000 goes towards paying rent.
Anjali has been operated on for the spinal injuries. But she will have to be in the hospital for a while, as a rod has been put in place to support her back. She has fractured her backbone. Her staying and food expenses are being taken care of by the hospital.
Mohanish Nikam, a social worker at Sassoon General Hospital, said, “It will be good if people help her, as the hospital has operated but she needs the money for post-operation treatment. A good amount of her medical bill is also pending.
“She will need at least a month’s time to recover fully. We will soon check her as it is almost a week since we operated, and decide on further action”, said Dr Swaroop Daniel, one of her doctors.
