At least 178 people suffered from food poisoning on Tuesday after they ate food items made from buckwheat flour in east Delhi.

Police said that most of the victims ate buckwheat flour items on Monday to terminate their daylong fast observed as part of Navratri celebrations. They bought the flour, prepared at a mill in Mandawali in east Delhi, from local shops.

Delhi government Health minister Dr AK Walia said; "We have formed a central committee and a team of doctors in every hospital to look after the cases coming in."

Eighty cases were reported in GTB hospital among which 30 patients have been discharged, 44 were reported from Dr Hedgewar hospital while 54 were reported from LBS hospital among which 46 persons have been discharged.

Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital Medical Superintendent Veer Singh said, "Treatment is on and everyone here is stable. They suffered from food poisoning." "They purchased the flour which was not packed. Nandu Masala Mill, Mandawali, has been found to be the manufacturer of the flour consumed by victims," Rajan Bhagat, Delhi police spokesperson said. Police are conducting raids in the area. As a precautionary measure the government has advised people not to purchase loose Kuttu atta.

Samples of atta have been collected from various places and sent to government labs for testing. Police said a few people have been detained.
